CHAPTER 11

The morning Becky woke up to dark circles under her eyes was the day she decided enough was enough. There was no way she could ignore the nightmares she was having anymore. They weren’t just nightmares. Somewhere, something was trying to break through to her, and if she didn’t get some kind of answers, she was sure whatever it was was going to kill her too.

“I always thought ‘dead tired’ was just an expression,” she said to her reflection in the mirror as she slowly got dressed. The reception she got at the breakfast table was not a surprise.

“Becky, are you all right?” Judge asked, peeking over the top of his paper.

“My goodness, dear. You look like something the cat dragged in,” Kitty said.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just haven’t been sleeping right,” Becky replied casually.

There was no way she was going to tell them that for the past three nights, she’d dreamt of a bag lady being chased down an alley only to meet her doom.

“Well, I’ve been sleeping just fine,” Fanny said before taking a bite of grits. “In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever slept better. Nothing ages a person quicker than not getting the proper sleep. All the ladies in Paris insisted that ten hours of rest was what a lady should have.”

“Maybe you should take that information and shove—” Becky started.

“Rebecca,” Judge interrupted. “That Herbert fellow seems nice. I was mighty impressed with him the other day. A good firm handshake. Looks a fellow right in the eye. Your mama’s told me he’s been quite the gentleman with you.”

“Yes,” Becky replied. She was annoyed and glared at Fanny. Of course, her lack of sleep didn’t help her temper.

“He might be just the fellow to escort you to the Potts’ annual picnic. He’s very personable. And there will be lots of food there. I’m sure he’ll be made to feel right at home,” Judge added while patting his belly.

“Yes, he’s a bit on the portly side,” Becky admitted.

“I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. On the contrary, a man with a little meat on his bones is obviously eating well. A father wants his daughter to be with a man who will provide. I hear he took you to the Silver Club. Didn’t hide the menu from you, did he?”

“No, Daddy.” Becky let out a sigh.

“Then he wants you to eat well too. Good on him.” Judge chuckled.

“I eat just fine.” Becky rolled her eyes as she poured herself coffee from the silver pot on the table.

“He took you to the Silver Club?” Fanny cleared her throat.

“Yes” was all Becky replied. She knew that Fanny had aspirations to go to the Silver Club with some Bruno with more brawn than brains and a wallet full of cabbage. “Just think, it could have been you if you hadn’t been so nasty to Herbert when you first met him.”

“What?” Kitty gasped. “Fanny, is that true? Did he make advances on you?”

“Calm down, Kitty,” Judge said, patting both Becky’s and Fanny’s hands.
